What it means to cook for loved ones

It would be vain of me to call myself a chef of any kind. But I do know how to turn on the gas stove and drizzle vegetable oil on a frying pan and fix myself a sunny side up. If I’m feeling extra happy, I might make a smiley face by using tomato ketchup, with the yolk acting as a single eye. Reminds you of anything?

I rarely cook because I’m not a good cook yet. But as I’ve reflected in my first blog post, well begun is half done, so nowadays I just cook and serve, and keep on improving, diversifying.

A Special Dinner for a Family Gathering

The other day, I made dinner for my family. My older brother, who lives alone as a successful researcher (honestly, I’m not entirely sure what he does for a living), visited home, and my parents returned from a hardworking and tiresome week at their farm (which is supposed to be a hobby). I wanted to cook something warm and nice for them.

This was going to be a special family dinner in quite some time.

Thus, I decided on clam chowder minus the clam, spaghetti with oil and garlic, and Ratatouille. I’ve made spaghetti quite often so I wasn’t too unconfident with cooking it, but it was my first time cooking the other two.

And voila, here is how they turned out.

It was a wholesome moment. I naturally felt critical about my food while my family members gave out words of compliment. Some real comments were shared too on how it could have been better, which I gladly accepted as an aspiring home cook.

The clam chowder was the best I have to say. It was warm, with the right amount of saltiness, and with the cream and potato, you just couldn’t go wrong with it.

The spaghetti was not brilliant, but it was alright. I didn’t have fresh basil leaves so I replaced them with spinach, which worked pretty well.

Ratatouille, the main dish, came out beautiful from the oven. Unfortunately, I didn’t put it in the oven for a sufficient amount of time because the zucchini was still a little hard. I’ll make sure not to repeat the same mistake.

What it means to cook for loved ones

It means something more than I thought. Initially, I simply wanted to cook for my tired mom who would usually cook. I’m not going to lie, I also wanted to eat clam chowder and ratatouille.

But when I saw my family enjoy the food I cooked, a tear rolled down my cheeks.

Okay, that’s a tad dramatic and completely false.

An imaginary tear rolled down my cheeks.

It’s more than the food that I cooked. It’s a memory. Something new in our humdrum lives.
