A Cup of Coffee in the Morning

Nothing like a cup of coffee to wake yourself up in the morning.

I don’t know how you get your fix before you begin your day, but I like to get one at a coffee shop. I do have an espresso machine at home, and every day a capsule is baptized in hot water to prepare myself to plunge into the sea of worldly matters.

Now, how ironic is that?

The Anticipation

It is probably the same feeling when a child gets to pick whatever they want at an ice cream store. Total freedom to expect the unexpected. The label says, ‘My Mom’s an alien’, but is that really what I’m getting?

‘엄마는 외계인’ = Mom is an alien

It’s a poor comparison, I know. I mean, how many different types of coffee do you really expect to see on a menu? Well, I do not wish to enrage coffee aficionados (Oh, mi dispiace!), but here in Korea, there are plenty of options to choose from. You’ll know when you get here.

Of course, not every day do you go to a new coffee shop. But when you do, it is great. And even if you don’t, you still have a variety of coffee to choose from the menu at the coffee shop you go to every day. And even if you choose the same coffee, it can smell and taste differently depending on your mood, or that of and the preparation by the barista (or, let’s face it, a lifeless part-timer that gathers enough energy to say ‘have a nice drink’ but not enough to give a genuine smile).

The Environment

The wait does not take long, but the environment still affects you. People chatting in the background, the kind of soothing music you can hear at a coffee shop (today, it was jazzy), the smell of coffee. From slumber to thunder. Not exactly a saying, but it rhymes.

Unfortunately, as with everything in today’s world, it is difficult to find a really authentic-looking coffee shop, especially when you’re living in the city. Honestly, I might just be exaggerating my sentiment right now because I can afford the time to do so. It’s always important to recognize your privilege and be grateful for it. Not everyone can afford the luxury of a cup of coffee in the morning. Great, guilt tripping myself again. Back to happiness.

Vanilla Latte

No, I’m not going to start writing a review of the vanilla latte that I’m having right now as I write this entry. All I can say is that I wanted something different from the usual americano I would have, and I wanted a little scent of vanilla. Unfortunately, my palette is not educated enough to tell the difference between milk and vanilla. Or perhaps whatever form of vanilla the part-timer added was too meager that even Kevin Hart wouldn’t drown in it. Yea, sorry. The joke is really getting old.

From Slumber to Thunder

By now, the coffee has turned cold. Its energy has been transferred into my body. Though I’ve absorbed liquid, I feel lighter and ready to go. Though it’s winter, there is a spring in my step. Just like the song, I feel snug in the jug. Why don’t you go ahead and start the day with a cup of coffee and The Java Jive.

I love coffee, I love tea.

I love the Java Jive and it loves me.
